Technology has endowed us with numerous benefits and conveniences. Online testing is one of them and has a lot of significance in recruitment. Gone are the days when candidates had to travel all the way from their place to an allotted testing centre to take up the exam. This whole testing process requires a lot of planning, preparation, manpower and expense. Proctoring or invigilation is an indispensable part of the testing procedure that ensures its fairness and authenticity. A proctor ensures the genuineness of the test taker and further ensures that he/she doesn’t indulge in any malpractice and/or use any unfair means to attempt the exam.

Online testing these days requires the candidate to only have a computer and a high-speed Internet. The candidates can conveniently take up the exam from the comforts of their own home or any other place they choose. It is convenient not only for test taker but also for the one who is conducting the test. Online exam proctoring is required to make online testing credible and valid.

Advantages of Remote and Offline Proctoring

Proctoring has an important role in ensuring the credibility and authenticity of any test and its outcome. The growth of online exams and assessments has automatically given rise to online exam proctoring. As long as the traditional and online versions of exams coexist, so will both types of proctoring, namely the traditional or offline proctoring and online exam proctoring.

Offline proctoring: Usually an invigilator is allotted to monitor a group of candidates in an examination hall for the entire duration of the exam. It is the responsibility of the proctor to confirm the identity of the candidate and also to ensure that he/she doesn’t cheat or use any other unfair means to attempt the exam. The main advantage of offline proctoring is that the physical presence of both the test takers and the invigilators at the same place makes it difficult to fake identity and/or to indulge in any illegal means. But in reality, the attention and focus of a physical proctor have their own limitations that can’t guarantee 100% foolproof results. And it is restrictive and expensive too.

Online exam proctoring: It is also referred to as remote proctoring in which the candidate is usually monitored via a webcam, mic and access to the screen of the candidate during the exam. There are mainly three types of remote proctoring:

  • Live online exam proctoring: A qualified proctor monitors the candidates’ audio-video and screen share feeds in real-time sitting at a remote location. Therefore, it is not very different from offline proctoring except for the flexibility of the proctoring location. Human involvement renders live online exam proctoring unsuitable for scalability as it turns out to be expensive.
  • Recorded proctoring: Candidates’ audio-video and screen share feeds are recorded and reviewed by a proctor at a later time. Usually, the recordings are played in a fast-forward manner for the proctor to detect any suspicious activities. The human involvement retains the disadvantages of the live online exam proctoring despite removing location and time constraints.
  • Automated proctoring:The latest and most advanced form of proctoring, it almost removes any need for human intervention at all. Face recognition helps authenticate the candidates’ identity. The system records the audio-video and screen share feeds and simultaneously monitors them for any suspicious activities using advanced video and audio analytics. This type of proctoring works by limiting candidate logins to specific IP addresses and blocking copy-pasting. It does not allow the candidate to switch the window or access any other application during the test. Automated proctoring also tracks mouse movement, candidate movement and other set functions. Removal of the location and time constraint make automated proctoring economical and foolproof.
